Gas Tax Relief?

John McCain wants a summer-long suspension of the $0.18 federal gas tax to combat soaring fuel prices.

“The effect will be an immediate economic stimulus - taking a few dollars off the price of a tank of gas every time a family, a farmer, or trucker stops to fill up,” McCain said. “And because the cost of gas affects the price of food, packaging, and just about everything else, these immediate steps will help to spread relief across the American economy.”

Why only a summer-long suspension? The federal gas tax money go into the U.S. Highway Trust Fund, which Congress uses as a revenue source for federal boondoggles. The fund would have paid for the Bridge to Nowhere, had it not been canceled.

Why not eliminate the federal gas tax entirely, and let the states build and maintain our highways?
