Car Free Day

Why is part of Wilshire Blvd. in Los Angeles closed tomorrow for Earth Day?
Wilshire is one of the main east-west arteries, running 16 miles from downtown LA to Santa Monica, critical to east-west commutes. The area that will be closed, four blocks from Harvard Ave. to Western Blvd., will be replaced by a “car-free festival” - hippie booths, live musical performances, a bike raffle, a reusable grocery bag giveaway, and a “special musical yoga experience.”
Patt Morrison at the LA Times’ Opinion Blog put it best.
Strolling the boulevard named after a millionaire socialist, Gaylord Wilshire, will no doubt be a pleasure, and a reminder of how delightful car-free living can be.
… did anyone who thought up this ”honor” also think of how many extra tons of carbon emissions will be burbling into the atmosphere today because of the traffic jams created by this one-day pedestrian oasis?
Not to mention the thousands of inconvenienced commuters. Plus, isn’t every day Earth Day?
